The importance of hand sanitizers on fighting covid 19

By Eric Khan

The importance of hand sanitizers on fighting covid 19

On 31 December 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported several cases of what seemed to be pneumonia in Wuhan City, China. ‘Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2’ (SARS-CoV-2) was confirmed as the contributing agent of what we now know as the fatal ‘Coronavirus Disease 2019’ (COVID-19). Since then, the virus has spread to more than 100 countries, including South Africa.
Since the outbreak of Coronavirus last year, many countries have been placed in lockdown to curb the spread of the virus. With so much information emerging by governments, health organisations and medical professionals around the world about how to prevent Coronavirus, medical experts all agree that proper hand washing is a crucial tactic in the fight against the spread of infection. If soap and water are not available, hand sanitizer can help rid your hands of unwanted germs. Public safety measures outlined by healthcare institutions and the World Health Organisation suggest that regular hand washing and sanitizing do kill Coronavirus.

it is imperative to make sure you choose a hand sanitiser with alcohol, one that contains between 60-95% alcohol. It is extremely important to also make sure that when using a hand sanitiser, you do so in the right way.

Hand Sanitisers come in a liquid, gel, or foam as well as in the form of wipes. They have become a hot commodity today and everyone carries a bottle whether it’s in their car, handbag, at their desk, or placed around their home. Covid-19 fears have turned the product into something of a Holy Grail, as they have been proven to be the most effective means of killing the virus before it spreads. This has been a large contributor to hand sanitisers either been completely sold out at certain retailers or been priced completely out of the market. Google searches for hand sanitiser have skyrocketed as purchasing hand sanitisers online has become the next best thing. According to market researchers at Adobe Analytics, demand for hand sanitizer has gone up 1,400 percent from December to January.

Hand sanitiser reviews have shown that when choosing a hand sanitizer, it is imperative to make sure you choose a hand sanitiser with alcohol, one that contains between 60-95% alcohol. It is extremely important to also make sure that when using a hand sanitiser, you do so in the right way. Generally, apply the liquid to the palm of one hand. Then rub it all over both hands until the sanitizer dries. This takes about 20 seconds. Be careful not to wipe the sanitizer off before it’s dry, as your efforts could then be in vain.
Hand Sanitisers should be used before and after touching any surface that other people have touched. It is wise to use hand sanitiser wipes to sanitise the handle of a shopping trolley before you use it and after you have pushed a shopping trolley around the store, after handling money, and after touching elevator buttons or door handles. Always wash your hands (with either soap and water or hand sanitizer) after each time you cough and sneeze.
Just in Gauteng alone, Hand sanitisers are readily available for sale at many retail suppliers such as Clicks and Dischem or even online at Takealot.com. They come in a range of different sizes from pocket-size bottles ideal for use at home and bulk quantities perfect for sterilizing offices and placing around the work environment.
When soap and water are not available, sanitize!
