Face masks – do they really help in protecting against Covid 19?

By Eric Khan

Face masks – do they really help in protecting against Covid 19?

Due to the rapid spread of the Coronavirus in South Africa, it has now become law for every person to wear a face mask while outdoors. Face masks in South Africa have become our new norm and fashion’s hottest accessory, but do face masks help in protecting against Covid 19?

Covid 19, or more commonly known as the Coronavirus, is spread by droplets that can spray into the air when an infected person talks, coughs or sneezes. These can enter the body through the eyes, nose, and mouth, either directly or after touching a contaminated object.

There are many conflicting views about whether a face mask is effective in protecting against Covid 19. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), if you are in good health you only need to wear a mask if you are taking care of a person with Covid-19. It is also essential to wear a mask if you are coughing or sneezing. WHO confirms that masks are not effective when used on their own, they must be used in combination with frequent hand cleaning with alcohol-based hand sanitizer or soap and water. If you wear a mask, you must know how to use it and dispose of it properly.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recommended that even seemingly healthy people should wear masks over their mouths and noses when venturing into places where it is difficult to maintain distance from other people, such as grocery stores and when using public transport.

Numerous reports are advising that wearing a face-covering can prevent an infected person from passing on the virus, rather than stopping someone contracting it. Cloth face-coverings can help reduce the risk of transmission in some circumstances – they might help stop the spread of coronavirus by people who are contagious but have no symptoms (known as asymptomatic transmission).

Before you buy or make a mask, learn which type is best and how to wear it.

Whether you are looking for plain and practical disposable 3 ply masks to certified respiratory masks, Medgear has a wide range of face masks to choose from.

“The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recommended that even seemingly healthy people should wear masks over their mouths and noses when venturing into places where it is difficult to maintain distance from other people, such as grocery stores and when using public transport.”

Now that you have decided which face mask is best for you, make sure you know how to use and remove it.

– First, clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water before putting on the mask.

– Cover your mouth and nose with the mask and make sure there are no gaps between your face and the mask.

– Avoid touching the mask while using it; if you do, clean your hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.

– Remember to replace the mask with a new one as soon as it is damp and do not re-use single-use masks.

– To remove the mask: remove it from behind (do not touch the front of the mask); discard immediately in a closed bin; clean hands with alcohol-based sanitizer or soap and water.
